It’s been a while since we’ve done anything here, but I’m taking on the practice of reading a chapter of Luke a day starting yesterday, so that in the month of December I will have read the entire gospel by Christmas Eve. Care to join me? I’ll try and do a daily post with mine as well. Let’s remember why we celebrate Christmas as we work through this Advent season!
Reflecting on Luke 1-2:
I was surprised by the humanity of these opening chapters. Zechariah is met by an angel, and even though he’d been praying for a child, doesn’t believe when God says, “Yeah, I’ll answer that prayer.”
I’m also picturing again what it would have been like to be new parents of the Son of God, and yet find yourself in incredibly difficult situations. I would like to think that if God was doing something this amazing, things would be clean cut and all the details worked out so nothing could go wrong. Instead, we find an engaged couple, having a kid while on a trip, not surrounded by friends and family in their own home, but instead by animals and strangers out at the manger. God meets humanity where they are.
I’m also glad for how God speaks through Anna and Simeon revealing to Mary and Joseph things about Jesus they didn’t even know. It reminds me of how important a church community is in raising children and supporting each other. God encourages and ministers to us through each other. May we each be open to what the Spirit has to say to us and through us to others.
What do you notice in these first two chapters of Luke?
